Beyond Toothbrush Project, Tanzania Oral Health Foundation


Beyond Toothbrush Project (BTP) is a school based dental health educational program founded by Tanzania Oral Health Foundation that seeks to educate the children aged 5-11 years about appropriate dental care and oral disorders. Children aged 5-11 years have been chosen as target population, because it is easier to change their habits and to teach them to use oral hygiene measures. Moreover, once they get accustomed to these habits, they will hopefully keep them throughout their lives and keep natural teeth for their lifetime. The objectives of the proposed program are: to train children in the classrooms to promote healthy behaviors regarding dental care and to increase the knowledge level and change behaviors of children regarding oral hygiene by 20% in one month.








TOHF is in one-month cooperative agreement sponsorship by Colgate Palmolive (T) Co.Ltd, Alban Health Care International Ldt (AHCI), Dawacall Company and Kim Hope Foundation to implement the Beyond Toothbrush Project (BTP).
BTP Project supports and advances implementation of Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children the plan for Dental Health care by providing a package of Dental Health Educational program to the children aged 5-11years about appropriate Dental care and Oral disorders, as a Key and Vulnerable Populations in support of the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania’s (URT) commitment to Dental health care.



Tanzania Oral Health Foundation (TOHF) implemented its first phase of Beyond Toothbrush Project (BTP) in Dar es salaam Region, specifically at primary schools of Kinondoni and UbungoMunicipalitywhich included, Laureate international, Turkish MaarifSchool, Kibangu English Mediumschool and Dar es salaam International School.
TOHF during the reported period of October 2020–November2020results to provide the implementation of Beyond Toothbrush Project (BTP) during the project duration, covering planned to implement a number of activities in order to achieve specific targets namely; number of students and teachers reached during the BTP Sessions, number of toothbrush and Floss distributed, Roll out of the Dental Health education Social Asset Mapping tool as part of BTP TEAM education activities, weekly Meeting with the BTTprovision of Dental health educational to student and teachers ,field visits for ongoing interventions, capacity building meeting at TOHF reviewed Dental care educational & Oral health.
The Dental health educational vulnerability index by peer BTT providers during mobilization activities and teaching,attended the training on TOHF (Tanzania oral health foundation) held in Dar es Salaam from 6th to 7th October 2020,
TOHF attended the high-level delegation lounging the Beyond Toothbrush Project which was conducted at Laureate International School (Mikocheni) ground. 9th October 2020
TOHFattended another Visit for BTP Dar Region which was conducted at Kibangu English Medium School and Turkish Maarif School, Kibanguwhere by BTP Team host the event from Training in the classroom theoryand practical about dental care, oral hygiene, other activities included toothbrush and floss distribution to the student and teachers, dancing and singing with student a song on how to care the tooth.A total of 4 primary schoolcovered from two municipality in Dar es Salaam regional with1216 clients which is 67.5 % out of 1800 monthly target started to do their program.
Achievement for this reporting period includes the following: Beyond Toothbrush Project reached 1216-target population. A total Boys student (BST)-512, Girls student (GST)-660, Male teachers (MT)-18, and Female teachers (FT)-26,)
Additional achievements involve the distribution of Toothbrush and floss1216 pieces to the all students and teachers.TOHF attained to reach 1216 out of planned 1800targets translating to67.5% achievements on BTBP.
Summary of Key Achievements by Program area
All the way through this reporting period (October 2020-november2020)TOHF achieved the following.
- Under Beyond Toothbrush Project (BTP) intervention there are two categories of targets to be achieved; namely train children in the classrooms to promote healthy behaviors regarding dental care and increase the knowledge level and changing behaviors of children regarding oral hygiene by 20% in one month,
- Train children in the classrooms to promote healthy behaviors regarding dental care TOHF reached 1216 children out of monthlytargets, which is anachievement.
- Increase the knowledge level and changing behaviors of children regarding oral hygiene TOHF reached 1216 clients out of 1800 monthly targets, which is achievement.
